The Germany Residency Program
Thanks to a generous grant from the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, the OAH is pleased to announce the inauguration of the Residency Program in American History — Germany (Germany Residency Program) at the University of Tübingen. Tübingen is located in southwestern Germany, twenty-five miles south of Stuttgart. The University of Tübingen is one of Germany’s oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher education. The Department of History and the Department of Modern Languages offer a variety of classes focusing on the United States.
The residency program will provide round-trip airfare, housing for thirty days, a modest honorarium (1,500 Euros), a graduate assistant, and office space with communications equipment.
The resident scholar will offer a seminar on a U.S. history topic of his or her design in June of 2012. The seminar will be open to twenty-five advanced undergraduate and graduate students. We expect the seminar to meet for four weeks (twenty hours of face-to-face instruction, conducted in English). Students in the seminar will be required to write a paper.
Application requirements are:
- Membership in the OAH
- A Ph.D. and past (emeritus status) or present affiliation with an American or Canadian college or university.
- A succinct, two-page curriculum vitae that includes a list of classes taught. Previous international academic lecturing experience is welcome.
- An outline indicating the applicant’s planned seminar at the University of Tübingen.
- The name and address of one reference.
All applications are to be sent electronically to Ms. Nancy Croker () by October 1, 2011. Selection will be made by a subcommittee of the OAH International Committee. We expect to make a decision and notify the awardee by November 15, 2011.
